In the month that marks the International Day of Islamic Art, this tour moves through the Museum’s gallery of Islamic cultures to discover the geometries underlying the design of some of its works. Geometry is one of the most distinctive features of Islamic art. Present in countless works – in circles, polygons, rotations, translations and symmetries – it serves as a principle of visual organisation and evokes ideas of unity, harmony and infinity. Along the way, visitors are invited to look closely at patterns, forms and geometric compositions and to explore their role in creating some of the most fascinating artistic expressions of the Islamic world.
