This tour invites us to discover representations of landscape along a route through several of the Museum’s galleries. Across the centuries and across cultures, landscape has taken on forms and meanings that reflect a wide range of world views, beliefs, traditions and artistic sensibilities. From the decorative richness of an oriental carpet to the delicacy of a Japanese print, by way of a medieval illumination and Italian and Flemish paintings, the tour ends with nature as the artists of the Barbizon School captured it. Between landscapes idealised, mythological, symbolic and realist, this tour reveals how craftsmen and artists of different periods interpreted the idea.
